My interviewer asked me about AEO & GEO and I messed up. Don't repeat my mistake please.
I recently went for an interview and even tho I knew what AEO and GEO is because I HAVE worked on it, I could not explain it to them. like at all. that is because I freaking forgot the full form maybe because I got nervous but yeah, I messed up. also maybe because I only did on page AEO and GEO in my actual work, so the off page part just was not there in my head when they asked. so here is my full research on this topic now so that I dont mess up again and so that you dont either, because I know most of us are only doing half of this without even realising it.
okay first, quick refresher on what these even stand for
AEO is Answer Engine Optimization. GEO is Generative Engine Optimization. That is literally it, that is the thing I blanked on. Two acronyms, sound almost the same, mean genuinely different things, and my brain just went blank the second she asked me to define them back to back.
so what is SEO doing, just so we are on the same page
SEO is the OG. It is literally optimizing your content so google ranks it high enough that people click on it. Keywords, backlinks, page speed, all of that. The whole point is the click. Someone searches something, your page shows up, they click, they land on your site. That is the entire game SEO has been playing for like two decades.
now here is where AEO comes in and why it is not the same thing
So the whole internet is shifting because of AI overviews and chatgpt search and perplexity, right. People are asking questions and getting a full answer right there without clicking anything. Like more than half of google searches now end without a single click, and that number gets even higher when an AI overview shows up. So SEO is optimizing to rank the page. AEO is optimizing to BE the answer. Not to be clicked, but to literally be the sentence that chatgpt or google's AI reads out loud to the user. That is the difference I think I mixed up in my head when I was nervous, I kept saying "ranking" when I should have said "being selected as the answer."
and GEO is the bigger umbrella above both of these
This is the part I genuinely did not explain well. GEO is not a replacement for AEO, AEO is actually just one piece INSIDE geo. AEO is specifically about winning that one answer slot for one query. GEO is about how the AI model understands and trusts your brand overall, across basically every conversation it might ever have about your space, not just this one search. So think of it like this, SEO is showing up on the results page, AEO is showing up inside one specific answer, and GEO is being baked into how the model thinks about you at all, period.
okay now here is the part I actually knew, on page stuff
For AEO on page, it is basically making your content painfully easy to lift out and quote. So proper schema markup, structuring your meta tags around the actual question people are asking, clear headings, internal links connecting related stuff logically. Basically formatting your answer like you are handing it directly to a robot on a plate.
For GEO on page, the big thing is factual density. Like if your page just says "we are a market leader" that is useless to an AI, it cannot extract anything from that. But if your page says "our 2025 study of 400 clients showed a 38 percent improvement," that is exactly the kind of specific, quotable fact these models want to grab onto. So basically, stop writing fluffy brand speak and start writing in actual numbers and specifics.
and here is the part I completely blanked on, off page stuff
This is where I lost it in the interview ngl. Off page for AEO means stuff like your business listings being consistent everywhere, building actual backlinks from credible sites, and just generally being seen as an authority through mentions in real publications. It is not just about your own website, it is about how the rest of the internet talks about you.For GEO off page, it gets even more specific. Things like keeping your business name, address and phone number identical across every directory, claiming your google business profile properly, having author pages that are actually linked to real linkedin or professional profiles so the AI can verify you are a real credible person and not some random content farm. And apparently stuff like wikipedia presence or getting talked about on reddit or in real media coverage, that stuff builds up slowly over months, it is not an overnight fix like on page changes can be.
so if I get asked this again
I am just going to say it simple. SEO gets you found. AEO gets you quoted directly inside the answer. GEO gets you remembered by the AI model itself, across every future conversation it has, not just the one search happening right now. And this time I am going to remember that off page matters just as much as on page, because that is literally the half of this I skipped and it showed.
Here's a quick comparison table:
The way I'd remember it for next time: SEO = found, AEO = quoted, GEO = remembered.
